About Black Sisters in STEM (Black SiS)
The Reality for Black Women in STEM
Black women represent one of the largest underserved markets and most significant disruptive forces in STEM. They constitute the fastest-growing female workforce population in the world.
Yet in the realm of Black women in STEM, the statistics are alarming:
- Almost 50% of Black women drop out of their STEM degree by sophomore year with financial hurdles being the #1 reason students stop-out or drop-out of college
- Black women hold less than 2% of STEM jobs globally, compared to 20% for their white counterparts.
- The projected widening wage gap in the tech industry, which could result in over $350 billion in lost wages for Black households by 2030, highlights the urgent need to address these disparities.
Key metrics on our fellows:
- 88% of fellows are low-income students
- 64% are first generation college students
- 14.6% of our fellows are refugees
